Lakeview School District stands united in support of making society a better place for everyone, especially those who for too long have been pushed aside, held down, and unheard. The events surrounding the murder of George Floyd give us pause as we struggle to reconcile this truth with the harsh reality of racial injustice in our country.
Five years ago, Lakeview made a commitment to creating a more equitable school district. This includes recognizing and working to dismantle the systemic racism that is part of our society and, in turn, part of all school districts. We know that there is work to be done for our schools to be equitable for our students and families of color. It is not enough for us to acknowledge the racism that is present. We must actively fight against it and be allies for the change required for all students, and in turn, our community, to thrive.
We ask all members of the Lakeview area to be a support to our African American community members during this time of pain. Martin Luther King Jr. warned about people who are “more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefer a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.” We ask you to join us in renewing our commitment to creating that just society for our students, families, and the greater Battle Creek community.
