One of our 1st Grade goals is to become fluent with addition and subtraction facts to 10. Fluent means that students should be able to quickly and correctly respond when asked a addition or subtraction fact. I strongly encourage you to work with your little one at home this year on the facts listed below.
You can make or by flashcards with the facts on them, put the facts on popsicle sticks, and even use computer games, websites and apps to help with this.
Do not discourage your little one from using their fingers when they are first learning the facts. As they are beginning their fact learning, encourage it, then as they get better and better at their facts they will begin to be able to tell you the answer without the need of their fingers.
