Homework Policy and Assignments

  • HOMEWORK POLICY

IT'S BETTER TO KEEP UP THAN TO CATCH UP!

    Dear Parents:

In an effort to promote self discipline, responsibility, and organization, your fourth grader will be provided with a HOMEWORK FOLDER (clear, plastic folder) and an ASSIGNMENT BOOK which he/she will be required to bring to and from school on a daily basis throughout the year.

All homework assignments and work not completed during class will be written by your fourth grader in his/her Assignment Book next to the appropriate subject area.

TWO NIGHTLY ASSIGNMENTS THAT WILL REMAIN CONSTANT THIS YEAR:

    •Read a minimum of 30 minutes
•Practice Multiplication Flashcards up to 12x12

    DAILY CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS

WHAT: All assigned work is to be completed within the class day. Since the majority of these assignments are done together, students are expected to complete them accurately. This entails writing in complete sentences and showing all work/thinking. Students are allotted ample time to complete these assignments during class and all daily work is due at the end of each school day.

If, for any reason, a student does not complete an assignment, it will be taken home and returned to school the next day. Work turned in later than the following morning will be considered late.

    MATH HOMEWORK

WHAT: In addition to the Multiplication Flashcard Practice, your fourth grader will be bringing home  Investigations Math Homework Assignments every week throughout the year. The focus of this homework will vary from week to week and will be an extension of what we are currently practicing in our classroom.

WHY: The purpose of this homework is for your child to demonstrate independent practice of the skills that have already been taught and practiced in class. These assignments are designed to take 10-20 minutes and the expectation is that your child will work beside you on these assignments so that he/she is able to show you what we have been working on in class. There is no better way to reach true mastery of a particular skill than by teaching it to someone else.

*Each family will have the opportunity to check out/borrow a Student Math Handbook for the year. Each homework assignment will list the corresponding pages that will help you understand what is expected in your child's answer.

    LANGUAGE ARTS  HOMEWORK

WHAT: Occasionally, your fourth grader will be assigned homework in the areas of Language Arts. This may include things such as vocabulary word practice, Weekly Reading Assignment, Wednesday Write Night, or a short writing assignment.

I encourage you to set up a scheduled time with your child for homework each day. Students should be able to complete most assignments independently, but do help if it is completely necessary. If you notice that your child is not able to do an assignment on his or her own, please email me or jot a note to me on the assignment. I will contact you if your child is falling behind or turning in poor work.

Thank you for your efforts in helping to enhance learning beyond the classroom!! I am looking forward to a very successful year!
